Reclaiming Self-Love: A Somatic Approach to Shedding Shame and Embracing Resilience

Somatic self-love is an alchemical process of bringing our essence down and into our bodies.

Reclaiming Self-Love: A Somatic Approach to Shedding Shame and Embracing Resilience

We often carry the weight of our experiences in the deepest fibers of our being, sometimes without even realizing it. This weight can be even heavier when it’s intertwined with the shame associated with childhood abuse.

But what happens when we find the strength to set down that burden and declare that it never truly belonged to us?

For many, including myself, this realization marks the beginning of a profound journey toward somatic self-love and healing.

The Liberation of Letting Go

One of the most liberating moments in my life came when I felt safe enough to release the shame I had been carrying on behalf of my abusers. It wasn’t an easy road; it required facing the impact of my childhood abuse head-on. Instead of dwelling on the explicit details of the events, I chose to focus on how these experiences were shaping my life in the present.

Shame is a powerful emotion. It can seep into the crevices of your identity, convincing you that you are fundamentally flawed or unworthy. For a long time, I bore this heavy cloak of shame, a remnant of the abuse that was never mine to carry. The journey of recovery brought this realization into the light.

Meaning Making and the Effects of Childhood Abuse

Recovery is not a linear path. It’s a complex process of unraveling and understanding, of finding meaning in the midst of confusion. When I started to concentrate on the effects of trauma rather than the trauma itself, a transformation began.

The shame, which had been a constant companion, started to come into focus as a misplaced emotion. It was something fostered by the actions and choices of others, not by anything inherent within me. Through breathwork, self-reflection, and the embrace of somatic practices, I gradually came to assert that the shame belonged to the abusers, not to me.

Rediscovering Lost Resources

As I worked through the feelings of shame, I also began to recognize the resources that had been stripped from me due to the abuse. Love, trust, safety, and a positive self-image were just a few of the treasures I had been denied. Exploring these themes of shame and lost resources, an important distinction started to emerge. There was a clear separation between the identity that had been enforced upon me by shame and the identity I preferred for myself in the world.

This was a pivotal moment in my recovery. Slowly, I started to shift from an identity marked by victimhood to one characterized by resilience and self-compassion. It wasn’t just about healing from trauma; it was about reclaiming my sense of self and the life that had been overshadowed by my past.

The Power of a Preferred Self-Concept

As my self-concept began to change, it had a ripple effect on the quality of my life. The traumatic past that once sat in the driver’s seat of my existence started to move to the back seat. In its place, a growing sense of empowerment and self-acceptance took the wheel.

This transition wasn’t solely about internal change. It also involved reaching out and identifying external sources of support and affirmation. I asked myself, “Who, from any time in my life, would be cheering for the changes I am making both internally and externally?” This question opened up a wellspring of emotional support from remembered relationships and even from figures I had never met but admired.

Somatic Self-Love as a Path to Healing

The somatic, or body-centered, aspect of my healing journey played a crucial role. The body keeps the score of trauma, as Bessel van der Kolk famously stated, and it can also play an active role in recovery. Somatic self-love practices helped me to reconnect with my body in a compassionate and nurturing way.

  • Body Awareness: This practice involved bringing gentle, nonjudgmental attention to bodily sensations, learning to listen to the wisdom of my body rather than viewing it as an adversary.
  • Grounding Techniques: Simple practices such as walking barefoot on the earth, feeling the sun on my skin, or focusing on my breath helped to anchor me in the present moment, providing a safe haven from the storms of past emotions.
  • Expressive Movement: Dance, yoga, and other forms of movement became ways to express and release the trapped energies of trauma. They were languages my body understood when words were insufficient.
  • Breathwork: for me, the most powerful tool to self-regulate and calm my nervous system, teaching me that I have the right to choose what energy is in my body.
  • Creating Rituals: Establishing daily rituals provided a sense of structure and predictability that was often missing from my chaotic childhood. They became acts of self-care that honored my needs and worth.

The Healing Continues

Healing from childhood abuse is a journey that may not have a definitive end, but it does have milestones of victory and empowerment. By shifting focus fromthe trauma to its effects, and by placing the shame where it truly belongs, we break the chains that bind us to our past. We start to see ourselves not as victims but as survivors, architects of our own futures.

As I embraced somatic self-love, my life quality improved tremendously. My traumatic past didn’t vanish, but it no longer defined me. Instead, my growing self-concept as someone worthy of love, respect, and joy became the narrative of my life. This wasn’t an overnight transformation but a gradual blossoming, a persistent journey toward the light after a long time in the dark.

In this process, I learned an invaluable lesson: we cannot change the past, but we can change the relationship we have with it. We can choose self-love over self-reproach, resilience over resignation. Each step taken in somatic self-love is a step toward freedom—freedom from the shame that was never ours to bear and the freedom to live fully in the present.

To anyone on a similar path, know that it is possible to find love for yourself that is as deep and vast as any ocean. The journey begins with a single step: the decision to believe that you are more than what happened to you. From there, each moment of self-care, each somatic practice, each act of kindness you show yourself is a brick in the foundation of a new life built on self-love and respect.

Your cheerleaders are there—past teachers, friends, family members, or even heroes you’ve never met. They’re the chorus of support urging you on, celebrating each victory with you. And as you continue to grow and change, they’re joined by the most important supporter of all: yourself.

The journey of somatic self-love is a beautiful, winding path back to your own heart. It’s a path worth taking. So take a deep breath, and begin.
